Abstract

The article talks about the new political realities that have arisen in the South Caucasus after
the valiant victory of Azerbaijan in the Patriotic War of 2020. The successful functioning and
development of this region was undermined by the processes that accompanied the collapse of the
Soviet Union. The return of occupied territories and the restoration has always been a top priority
for the government and people of Azerbaijan. The signing of the Tripartite Agreement under the
chairmanship of the Russian Federation proved Azerbaijan's commitment to the norms of
international law and helped to avoid provocations and clashes with the Armenian side in the
early stages of demilitarization and border demarcation.
With the mediation of Russia, numerous tripartite summits were held with the participation
of the Presidents of Russia, Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of Armenia. Russia's distraction
from the war in Ukraine can be interpreted as an auspicious moment for the US and the EU, which
are also launch parallel attempts to normalize relations between the two countries. The EU
mission in this direction can be called significant. The results and success of all trilateral meetings
can be called mutual recognition of the borders of both states, refraining from the use of force or
the threat of its use, discussion and resolution of all problematic issues solely on the basis of
mutual recognition of sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of borders in accordance
with the UN Charter and Alma-Ata declaration in 1991.
Awareness of the realities of the new geopolitical situation by both the government and the
opposition of the Armenian side can increase the chances of signing a peace treaty with Azerbaijan
as soon as possible. This, in turn, will lead to the restoration of diplomatic relations between
Armenia and Türkiye and the unblocking of all communication ties in the region.
