Our 190-year-old contemporary – Seyid Azim Shirvani (To the poet’s 190th anniversary)

Abstract

 Throughout his writing career, Seyid Azim Shirvani not only continued the centuries-old traditions of Eastern poetry with high artistry, but also enriched Azerbaijani literature with new enlightenment ideas in a context of significant socio-political changes; and in the article it is dealt with his important role in our literary history. It is noted that the poet, who extolled spiritual beauty in his brilliant poems consisting of valuable examples of poetry, also had a sharp manner towards the current issues of the period in his realistic satires, and gave special importance to the dissemination of humanist ideas in his didactic works. In the article these issues is scientifically analyzed and the service of Seyid Azim Shirvani, who was always the pre-eminent of the struggle of leading intellectuals for the socio-cultural progress of society is researched. His opening of a new-style school in his native language to implement his enlightening ideas in the name of public service and his innovative initiatives that left a deep mark on the history of Azerbaijani education are being interpreted from a scientific and theoretical perspective.
