It is accepted that the oil, gas and gas condensate deposits discovered in the South Caspian Basin (SCB) are spatially related to mud volcanoes. An objective analysis of this relationship can be obtained based on geological interpretation of 2D / 3D seismic data. The information contained in the seismic data makes it possible to determine the main stages of the formation of a mud volcano and its eruptive channel, as well as the role of this natural process in the formation of hydrocarbon deposits in the SCB. Based on the results of the work performed, it has been established that the objects identified in the South Caspian basin, previously taken as anticlinal structures, are giant mud volcanoes.
